BIG PIC: Tanzanian port hits monthly throughput record
Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS), the only specialized container terminal operator in Tanzania’s largest sea port, set a new monthly throughput record in August 2017, having handled 48,158 TEUs – a nearly 5 percent increase from the previous record of 46,080 TEUs, set in December 2015.
The increase was tied to a rise in export transit traffic originating in East Africa’s landlocked countries. TICTS was able to process this traffic more efficiently thanks to two new Panamax quay cranes that the terminal installed in the first quarter of 2017.
“More than ever, TICTS is embodying its mission to be the leading container terminal in Tanzania and the gateway to sub-Saharan Africa,” said Jared Zerbe, CEO of TICTS. “Looking forward, we see excellent prospects for servicing larger vessels thanks to the increased productivity brought about by our recent upgrades.”
